2011 Year In Review

Another year in books! Thanks to all the athletes who put their trust in me this season. Thanks also to NOW Bike, ThuroBread, Podium Sports Therapy Massage, MorningStar Chiropractic and The Bicycle Fit Guru for taking care of my athletes. And thanks to you all for reading. Here’s how it shook down….

Minnesota Junior Elite Team (MJETS) It had been over a decade since I worked with a youth program and it felt great to be back. Every single kid on my team finished every single race they entered. One even went to the USAT Youth National Championships in San Diego. The season’s highlight had to be when three of them (ages 11 – 14, racing against adults) placed 5th out 19 teams at the Waseca Tri Relay and missed the podium by only 1 minute 16 seconds. ….of course they might tell you it was the team trip to Dairy Queen.

MediFit Corporate Tri Team All first-timers. All finished. Perfect.

Team in Training Another great season with TNT. All but one of the 34 beginners finished their first race at either the South Maui Triathlon or the Minneapolis Triathlon and the veteran racers found 2 podium spots.

I love that fact that I can’t remember all the PR’s and podium appearances. Here’s what I do remember about the athletes I coached this year:
– 7 podium spots
– 4 first-time Ironman finishes and 1 Ironman PR
– 2 first-time 70.3 finisher and (at least) 7 70.3 PRs

– Only paraplegic athlete to finish Ironman AZ

From a marketing perspective I’m supposed to say that I only put on a number and raced twice this year, landing on the podium in both races like some kind of endurance sport Bobby Fischer. The reality is that these past two years have been my worst in a decade. I came into the year with bone spurring on foot so bad that the doctors said my running days were done. For reasons I don’t understand my foot now feels fine and I’m running again. It’ll be a long road back. I’m ready for it.
